Carnegie Mellon University – ICIT Capstone Project

WAYNE, Pa - May 16, 2022

PCN’s President & CEO, Katrin Hillner and Dr. Bruce Young, PCN’s GRC Practice Lead, recently met with master’s students from Carnegie Mellon University to support research into the state of cybersecurity risk for education institutions. The student team was assessing current risks and threats to both K-12 and Higher Education organizations and sought the expertise of security leaders to gather observations and opinions from technical, policy, and management perspectives. Katrin provided valuable insight into effective cyber and technology management, citing that security leaders need to “acknowledge the priorities of these institutions, and then tie cyber to them” as a way to bridge the ostensible gap between school administrators and IT teams. Highlighting that many institutions are seeking assistance in bolstering their security, Dr. Young noted that many could benefit from a centralized security operations center (SOC), a concept that he and others have been focusing on at Harrisburg University. This idea would “utilize cloud-based mechanisms and rely on strategically placed sensors that report back to the centralized SOC,” helping to lessen the burden on schools’ limited personnel and resources.

Mack Peterman, a part-time PCN security analyst, was also a member of the student team and attributes much of the project’s successful completion to his experience and time working with Katrin and Dr. Young. “My time with PCN’s GRC Practice has provided excellent learning opportunities that have supported both academic and professional projects. A huge thank you to Katrin and Bruce for their leadership and guidance and I hope that PCN and CMU continue to work together to promote cyber awareness and training!”
